Over the past 2 decades we have seen and experienced climate change in reduced rainfalls, in rapidly increasing day temperatures, and depletion of sub-surface water supplies. The adverse effects of this have become increasingly noticeable on the quality of crop plants. One of the major contributing factors to reduced plant quality is a reduction in Calcium supply to plant shoots, leaves and fruits. Calcium is an essential plant macronutrient with key structural and signalling roles. Calcium ions act as: an osmoticum within vacuoles; a stabilizing element of membranes; a strengthening agent in cell walls; and a secondary messenger for a multitude of signals.
Research has shown that plant growth rate is directly proportional to the available calcium and the extent of its presence in cell walls. The uptake of calcium through the roots, and thereafter through xylem is highly dependent upon water intake via roots. Thus, during periods of water deprivation, plants cannot absorb calcium via roots, and consequently will result in a depletion of calcium storage in vacuole cells, and consequently a reduction of calcium in cell membranes, followed by reduction in its signalling/messenger functions.
The leaf vacuole is widely considered to be the major Ca store in plant tissues, but this is dependent upon the ability of cells to absorb and de-sorb available calcium.
Global warming and its consequent reduction in water supply has been foremost in the thinking of Panaf, where our objective has been to help solve to-morrow’s problems today. This is where the ANODS delivery vesicle is a wonderful tool in alleviating drought-induced plant deficiencies. ANODS will encapsulate water soluble calcium (calcium nitrate), ANODS display rapid trans-foliar penetration and also rapid absorption through cell membranes, where the calcium is released into the mitochondria and find its way to the vacuoles for storage and release for whatever purpose it is required. The effect is increased plant vitality regardless of water supply.
Clearly, this formula is not aimed at soil modification of pH.
